The number of vehicles equipped with the transponder-based anti-theft system has been increasing dramatically. Soon, almost every new vehicle produced will have an engine immobilizer type system as standard. Even some motorcycles, large trucks and construction equipment are being equipped with these types of systems.
Programming keys has also been an evolving process. In the late 1990s, most of the programming devices were limited to manufacturer specific equipment or on-board programming. The advantage of manufacturer specific devices was that programming was easier as the tools were usually limited to one vehicle manufacturer. The disadvantage was that programming was limited to usually one vehicle manufacturer.
Today’s multi-function programming devices are becoming capable of programming a significant number of manufacturers and vehicles. This brings us to the KeylessRide HotWire, a multi-function programming device that incorporates an interface box using a Windows™ based laptop computer. This combination provides the ability to upgrade to a faster computer without having to modify or upgrade the interface box.
The HotWire box is compact, measuring only 6-5/8” x 4-3/8” x 1-3/8”. A 10-foot USB 2.0 cable connects the laptop computer with the box and a six-foot vehicle cable connects HotWire to the ODBII port.
Once the software has been loaded onto the laptop and connected to the vehicle via the Hotwire hardware and cables, programming begins with selecting the year, make and model vehicle. The software provides step-by-step remote and key programming guidance. Using a laptop computer enables color pictures and part numbers for the transponder keys and the remotes to be shown on the screen. An Internet connection is not required for programming any vehicle.
The following software programs are available for the HotWire.
