Electric strikes have been designed not only to operate specific application locks, but many are also sized to fit specific frame materials and configurations. In the early days of electric strikes, the major concern when ordering a heavy-duty electric strike was the position of the solenoid. All choices involved a high-profile body with an external solenoid. There were three solenoid position options: sticking up, sticking out or sticking down. Locksmiths had to become adept at using a drill and chisels to install one of these, especially in concrete-filled frames.
Today, HES offers the 4500 Series, heavy-duty, cast stainless steel electric strikes designed for cylindrical locks and most mortise locks with up to 3/4" throw latch bolts. The HES 4500 Series meets or exceeds the BHMA 156.31, Grade 1 standards. These electric strikes have a 2-11/16" opening to accommodate the variable positioning of different manufacturers' mortise locks latch bolts and cylindrical locks latch bolts. HES includes an adjustable tab that keeps the mortise lock deadlatch retracted when the door is closed and latched. Built into the 4500 Series electric strike is a horizontal adjustment that accommodates for variations in the door and frame.
The HES 4500 Series electric strikes (fail secure only) can be installed into 2" UL 10C fire rated 3 hour frames, having a 1/2" drywall penetration. In plain English, the face of the metal frame (the part that is visible with the door closed) is two inches wide. However, when the frame is installed onto a wall, one-half inch of the dry wall is slid behind the frame. This reduces the amount of clearance to approximately 1-1/2” between the edge of the frame and the drywall for mounting an electric strike. Three sizes (1/2”, 1” and 2”) of optional lip extensions are available to accommodate different sized frames. Lip extensions must be ordered with the electric strike.
The low-profile HES 4500 Series electric strikes occupy approximately 1-3/8" depth. The 4500 Series electric strikes are designed to fit an ANSI (4-7/8”) strike opening with 1" deep edge cutout to accommodate the lip. The edge cutout is 3-5/8" high.
When installing the HES 4500 Series electric strike to operate with a cylindrical lockset, the centerline of the latch bolt lines up with the centerline of the electric strike. However, when installing the electric strike to secure a mortise lockset, the centerline of a standard mortise lockset is 3/8” beneath the centerline of the electric strike. Depending upon the lock manufacturer, the latch bolt and deadlatch may be located above or below the centerline. The adjustable deadlatch tab can be positioned high or low within the opening. Note: Before installing any electronic locking device, obtain approval from the local authority having jurisdiction.
The following mortise locksets are compatible with the HES 4500 Series electric strikes: Accurate, Almet, Arrow, Baldwin, Best, Corbin/Russwin, Falcon, Marks, Omnia, PDQ and Sargent (7800, 8200 and 9200).
The 4500 Series electric strikes have a patented keeper pin locking design. The single keeper pin is a continuation of the continuous duty solenoid armature. According to HES, the 4500 Series electric strike has a forcing strength rating of 3,000 pounds, and a cycle rating of 1,000,000 operations. This field-reversible, dual voltage electric strike draws .24 Amps @12VDC, and .12 Amps @ 24VDC. The HES 4500 Series electric strikes ship from factory configured to 12VDC.
When wiring the 4500 Series electric strike to 12VDC, the violet wire is connected to the red wire, and the red/green wire is connected to the black wire. The red wire is connected to the positive of the power supply, and the black wire is connected to the negative.
When wiring the 4500 Series electric strike to 24VDC, the violet and black wires are connected. The red wire is connected to the positive of the power supply, and the red/green wire is connected to the negative. NOTE: Before connecting any electric strike to a power source, verify the voltage using a multi-meter. Some power supplies and transformers can operate at higher levels than listed. According to HES, any input voltage exceeding 10 percent of the electric strike's solenoid may cause severe damage to the unit and will void the warranty.
The HES 4500 Series electric strike is available in six finishes and can be ordered with a latchbolt or latchbolt strike monitor. For non-fire rated applications, the 4500 Series electric strike can be order in a Fail Safe version.
Options for the HES 4500 Series electric strikes are a 2001 Plug-in bridge rectifier, a 2005- SMART-Pac ™ II in-line power controller, a 2006P - Plug-in buzzer, and a 2009P - Plug-in LED.
