Schlage Keypad Locks

Dec. 1, 2006
To prevent unauthorized access, Schlage’s Keypad Locks for residential applications have vandal resistant clutching levers/knobs.

Controlling access for residential applications is moving towards electronics for a number of reasons. One reason is that children and teenagers especially, as well as many younger to middle age adults, are computer savvy. They are comfortable with pushing buttons on a key board or cell phone in order to do more than just type a letter or make a call. Secondly, keypad-operated electronic locks can enable entry without requiring a key that can be lost or forgotten.

Schlage is introducing their keypad locks for residential and light commercial applications. These Grade 2 ANSI/BHMA certified leversets are equipped with a patented commercial grade clutching motor drive; tested to 1 million cycles. To prevent unauthorized access, the Schlage Keypad Locks have vandal resistant clutching levers/knobs. To simplify installation, the handed levers are reversible to accommodate left or right hand doors.

The Schlage Keypad Locks have a solid appearance with a three-inch wide by almost seven inches lock exterior metal chassis and escutcheon. The spindles are firmly attached without having noticeable free-play. An 11-button backlit keypad and an override lock cylinder are built into the escutcheon. The keypad is equipped with 11 silicon rubber buttons that are epoxy coated to resist wear and to protect the characters. The keypad illuminates when the Schlage button is pressed.

The Schlage Keypad Locks are powered by a nine volt battery and fits a standard 161 door prep.

There are two models of the Schlage Keypad Locks: the FE595 Keypad Entry with thumbturn, and the FE575 Keypad Entry with Auto-Lock Feature. The FE575 is a storeroom function that is normally locked from the outside. The interior lever/knob always provides free egress. When the outside lever/knob is unlocked electronically, it automatically re-lock five seconds after use.

The FE595 is an entry function, having a thumbturn on the interior assembly in order to electronically switch between unlocked and auto locking. When unlocked, the FE595 thumbturn is vertical and the lock is in the passage function. When set to auto locking, the thumbturn is horizontal and the outside lever lock automatically re-locks five seconds after use.

Programming is the same for both models. There is one six-digit Programming Code, and up to 19 User Codes. The unit comes pre-programmed with a unique Programming Code and two User Codes. The Programming Code can add and delete User Codes. It cannot operate the lock. The User Codes cannot add or delete the Programming Code or User Codes. The User Codes can operate the lock.

IMPORTANT: There is no universal factory default for the Programming Code. Each unit’s default Programming Code is determined by its serial number.

Code information is in two locations: stick-on label on Programming/Operating Guide and a stick-on label on the outside chassis. These labels contain the Programming code, User Code A and B, the Model number and the Serial number.

To electronically operate the Schlage Keypad Lock, there is a 10- digit keypad and a Schlage labeled button above the keypad buttons. When gaining access, pressing the Schlage button illuminates the keypad and clears any previous entries. Then enter a User Code to gain access or the Programming Code to program the lock.

A tamper alarm prevents manipulating the keypad in order to determine a User Code. The lock’s alarm will sound after four invalid code are entered and the keypad shuts down for 30 seconds.

Schlage designed the locks operation around the Schlage button that is located above the keypad buttons. The Schlage button illuminates to indicate the operating functions of the Keypad Lock. While a person is operating the lock, the Schlage button will:

When first pressed, the blue backlight illuminates the keypad and clears any previously pressed keys. The lock is ready to receive a code.

As a code is entered, the light blinks green with each key press. A beep is sounded along with the green blink.

  • Blinks red with two beeps with any failure. A failure could be an invalid code.
  • Blink green once the correct code has been entered until the lock relocks.
  • Illuminate orange when in the Programming Mode.
  • Blinks and beeps three times acknowledging entry into Programming Mode, menu selection or code entry.
  • Blinks red with a hi-lo beep to indicate abnormal condition.
  • Green blink with a hi beep followed red with a lo beep indicates user disabled mode.
  • Short blink repeated to indicate dead battery.

If the Programming and User Codes are changed and lost, the Serial Number is necessary in order to obtain the default codes. Resetting a Keypad Lock resets the Programming and User Codes to the unique codes printed on the label.

To restore all programming to the factory preset, be certain you have the preset codes, at least the Programming Code prior to resetting the lock.

Note: The Programming Code is found on the Programming/Operating Guide or on the back of the outside chassis.

To program the lock:

Step 1. With the lock on the door, remove the inside thumbturn assembly.

Step 2. While holding onto the keypad assembly, carefully disconnect the battery connector cable from the battery.

Step 3. With the battery disconnected, press and release the Schlage button above the keypad.

Step 4. Reconnect the battery and wait until the Schlage button is no longer lit.

Step 5. Within ten seconds, press and hold the Schlage button until it lights green and the lock beeps.

Step 6. Reassemble the lock.

Step 7. Enter the default Programming Code. The Schlage button should illuminate orange to indicate it is in the Programming Mode.

The following is a Quick Programming Reference. After entering the six-digit Programming Code and pressing the Schlage button, then press:

  1. to add a new User Code. The new User Code is then entered and reentered
  2. to delete one existing User Code. The User Code is then entered and reentered.
  3. to change the Programming Code. The Programming Code is then entered and reentered.
  4. to disable all User Codes. To enable all User codes, enter the Programming Code.
  5. to turn on or off the beeper. Repeat to reverse.
  6. to delete all existing User Codes. Then enter the Programming Code. Use 1 to enter new User Codes.

The locks are equipped with mechanical key override. A rekeyable five pin tumbler “C” keyway lock cylinder is located on the escutcheon beneath the keypad. The key override requires that the key be turned clockwise almost 270 degrees to mechanically unlock the lock from the outside. The mechanical key override key can only be removed in the start position.

Schlage Keypad Locks are available in Camelot and Plymouth escutcheon styles. There are four styles of levers and two styles of knobs.
