As a lifelong resident of Chicagoland, my favorite football team is the Bears. They are not very powerful these days but in 1985 the Bears had one of the best defenses in football. I can still remember watching the 1985 Bears on defense as they easily pushed offensive lines backwards into the quarterback on every snap of the ball. Their offense in 1985 was not quite as good and Jim McMahon, the quarterback at the time, still suffers from the pounding he received 30 years ago.
When it comes to powerful football offenses today, the Green Bay Packers come to mind. Aaron Rodgers is one of the premier quarterbacks in the game. While the Green Bay offense is up to the task, their defense is not comparable to the offense. So far this year the Packers offense has been able to win games in spite of the amount of points allowed by their weak defense.
Offense and defense came to mind recently after viewing a flurry of E-mails on a social locksmith website. Topics during one heated discussion included politics, licensing, scammers and business development. At one point someone mentioned my name in their E-mail so the complete group of E-mails was automatically forwarded to me.
Locksmith licensing is a defense. It is a way of restricting who can enter the profession. Unless licensing is on the books in every state and every state enforces the regulations, Licensing will never have the same winning effect for locksmiths as the 1985 Bears had in football. It is hard to individually affect whether licensing is passed or not but it is easy to be affected by licensing if a locksmith licensing law is passed.
Locksmith licensing is a defense. Business development can take many forms. Scammers have very little defense against some of the negative publicity they have received but their tactics seen in phone books and on websites is a positive offense that cannot be denied.
In the final analysis each of us must decide what is the best way to build a business. Will the public be more impressed with a strong defense or a strong offense? Being well prepared on both sides of the ball would be the ultimate solution. Meanwhile my money is on the best offense you can deliver.
