Vehicle Door Lock Shells

The 2013 Cadillac ATS and XTS, and the 2013 Ford Fusion have a shell that covers the driver’s door lock. To remove, there is a slot along the bottom of the shell. The tip of the key is inserted into the slot and the shell pops off in order to gain access into the passenger compartment in case of dead battery, etc. Once the door has been unlocked, the shell snaps back onto the door handle.

Electronic Keys Stop Working

According to a bunch of news outlets, the Marriot Hotel in Denver, Colorado upon the strike of midnight, locked the guest out of their rooms. Disaster resulted during those three hours. According to management, no other Marriots reported problems. No other hotels reported similar problems. Is this an argument for key override?

Toyota Emergency Keys

Here are four photos of a Toyota emergency key, showing what the key looks like. The blade is .065” thick, approximately two-thirds the thickness of the regular key. The emergency key has cuts on only one side and is specifically designed to operate only the mechanical lock of those vehicles with passive entry/passive start.

The 2011 Toyota Sienna emergency key part number is 69515-08020. The 2012 Toyota Camry emergency key part number is 69515-33100.

Bauer Lock in Truck Bed Cover

These double-sided convenience key locks have five wafers and what appear to be three depths of cut. We have collected a few of the Bauer ML key codes. The known depths of cut are 1- .276”, 2- .244” and 3- .213”. The depth increment is .0315” or .8mm. An example ML key code is ML033, having the depths of cut of 13122.

There does not appear to be an aftermarket key blank yet. Original key blanks from Bauer at 866-682-2837. This same key blank is used for the Bauer SL, ML, CH, J and DM code series. The Ilco X226/HYD12 and Jet HYD12NP can be used as a substitute key blank.

Unique Tools

Although this is not exactly a tool, a friend showed me this bathroom sink.

Jet Hardware Key Blanks Update

The Jet LXP90H-PH key blank has the side milling that is required on some of the Kia and Hyundai secondary locks. This side milling is not in the LXP90 key blanks. The Jet LXP90H-PH key blank do not affect the operation of Lexus and Mazda vehicles equipped with the high security locks.

In the chart on page 50 in my December column, the Weiser information for the Smart Key should have been Jet WR7-NP and Ilco N1176. My apologies for any problems that may have resulted.

Estimates

When you present an estimate, should you show separate prices for parts and labor or do you just combine them into one amount?

What percentage of your estimates are successful?

If you win every estimate, are your prices too low?

If you do not win many are your prices too high?

Has any customer ever asked you to lower your estimate?

Have you lowered the estimate?

Car-Opening Techniques: 2006-on Toyota RAV4

This month we will offer recommended car-opening techniques for the 2006-on Toyota RAV4. The third generation four-door RAV4 is equipped with bicycle-style cables inside of the doors. Some models are equipped with the anti-theft door relocking system. When unlocking the door lock mechanism, the alarm indicator will flash if equipped.

Warning: The multi-layer weather stripping is very tight. Failure to remove wedges prior to bringing the under-the-window tools into the passenger compartment can result in the window glass breaking.

Note: The inside front door handles override the relock mechanism (if present) by holding the inside handle in the open position.

The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2006-on Toyota RAV4:

Use the High Tech Tools 78SG Tool and the One Hand Jack Tool to unlock the front passenger’s door locking mechanism. Use the One Hand Jack Tool to separate the doorframe from the vehicle. Insert an inflatable wedge in the top rear corner and inflate. Remove the One Hand Jack Tool. Insert the #78SG car-opening tool into the passenger compartment with the tip pointing downward. Slide the tool until the tip is positioned behind the door handle. Pull back on the tool to move the handle into the unlocked position to unlock the locking mechanism. Open the door using the outside door handle.

Use the Pro-Lok AO-36 MCOT- Long Tool, AO33 MCOT-Separator Tool and an inflatable wedge to unlock the rear passenger’s door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge eight inches from the front edge of the rear passenger door window. Inflate the wedge according to manufacturer’s instructions. Insert the AO33 one inch from the front edge of the window with the tip facing rearward. Insert the AO-36 into the door cavity at five inches from the front edge of the window glass with the tip facing forward. Lower both tools 16 inches. Rotate both tools having the tips on the passenger compartment side of the window glass. Deflate the wedge.  Raise the AO33 tool, having the tip in the passenger compartment. Raise the AO36 tool through the opening created by the AO33 tool. Lift the AO36 tool until the tip is in the passenger compartment. Position the tip of the tool against the manual lock-unlock button. Push the button rearward to unlock the door locking mechanism.

Use the Slide Lock Frameless Window Tool™ and a wedge to unlock the front passenger’s door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the wedge at the top rear corner of the doorframe to relieve gasket pressure. Slide the Frameless Window Tool into the passenger compartment above the wedge. Slide the tool in carefully to avoid the coupler damaging the car’s finish. Manipulate the tool over the inside door handle. Pull back on the handle to unlock the door locking mechanism. Open the door using the outside handle.

Use the Steck Manufacturing BigEasy “Glo” and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by first inserting the wedge or inflatable wedge into the top corner of the door. Once the door has been wedged out, insert the BigEasy tool into the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool to position the ninety degree bend tip behind the inside door handle. Carefully pull on the inside door handle to unlock the locking mechanism. With the handle in the release position, pull on the outside door handle and open the door.

Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1015 car-opening tool to unlock the front passenger’s door. Begin by placing two wedges forward of and behind the inside door handle about eight inches apart. Insert the TT-1015 between the wedges. Lower the tool until the upper bend is beneath the base of the window glass. Carefully position the upper bend just beneath the weather stripping on the inside of the passenger compartment. Stop and remove the wedges. Carefully raise the tool into the passenger compartment until the tip is inside the passenger compartment. Manipulate the tool positioning the tip behind the inside door handle. Carefully lever the handle out to unlock the door. With the handle in the open position, pull out on the outside door handle to open the door.

The direction to rotate 2006-on Toyota RAV4 driver’s door lock plug to the unlocked position is clockwise.
