2013 Ford Escape
The 2013 Ford Escape will be available with the Ford Intelligent Access with push-button start. The push-button start feature requires the key fob to be somewhere within the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
Equipped 2013 Ford Escape models will have a new lock mechanism and code series for the emergency lock. This sidewinder type lock mechanism will be using the 11501-13000 code series. The key blade accommodates only seven cuts. According to resources, the emergency lock will be located in the driver's door handle.
Photoluminescent Exit Signs
Photoluminescent Exit Signs are a retrofit alternative to electrical exit signs as they can last for many years. They do not require electricity, which eliminates the need for electrical installation. There is no electrical bill or batteries to replace.
Photoluminescent exit signs illuminate by absorbing light emitted from regular light sources. They can obtain their power from fluorescent, incandescent, halogen, metal halide or mercury vapor light that shines on the face of the exit sign. Only a small amount of light is required to charge the sign for a minimum of at least 90 minutes in complete darkness.
Most buildings can illuminate a light in proximity to each sign during non-business hours. Buildings must be illuminated when occupied. Some buildings that would not be practical for photoluminescent signage are restaurants, bars and movie theatres.
Be sure to purchase signs that are compliant to UL924 Listed. This Standard is based on regulations set forth by the IFC (International Fire Code), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), IBC (International Building Code), and ICC (International Construction Code.
Weird Door Closer Installations
This door closer was installed onto the secure side of the door with the foot mounted onto the hinge jamb. I guess there are quite a few people who do not read instructions before installing a door closer.
Stanley Black & Decker HHI Unit for Sale
According to news reports, Stanley Black & Decker, Inc. has put up its Hardware and Home Improvement (HHI) unit for sale in an auction. The lock portion of the HHI unit, part Stanley after the 2010 merger, makes door locks under the brands Baldwin, Kwikset, Weiser Lock and K2 Commercial. It appears the sale does not include commercial companies including Best Access Systems, Safemasters, Sargent and Greenleaf, Inc., Stanley Access Technologies, Stanley Door Closers or Omnilock.
Fire Rated Cable Ties
Many codes require specific high temperature cable ties to be used in fire rated applications. These fire rated cable ties are ROHS compliant and can be used in applications where low smoke and low flame is a concern, as in air handling spaces.
Leaking Door Closer
At a recent installation, I came across a leaking surface mount door closer. The interesting thing was the closer was leaking from the upper spindle seal, not the lower one.
Reading a Fire Label
Here is a Warnock Hersey Listed Fire Door Label. The label is for Cal-Wood, in Santa Rosa, CA. This ¾ hour rating requires a minimum of a ½" latch throw. Stamped into the label is the WHI number. The label covers a single or pairs of doors including double egress. The door jamb will also have a label.

Car-Opening Techniques : 2007-up Chevrolet Suburban
This month we will offer recommended car-opening techniques for the 2007-up Chevrolet Suburban. The Suburban is equipped with vertical linkage rods on the front and rear doors. The front and rear doors are equipped with vertical locking buttons. Note: The car opening methods will also unlock the 2007-up Avalanche, Escalade, Tahoe, Yukon and full sized pickups.
The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2007-up Chevrolet Suburban:
Use the High Tech Tools Double Tool 26 and a wedge to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the wedge forward of the outside door handle assembly. Insert the #26 car-opening tool into the door cavity with the tip facing rearward. Lower the tool until the tip is beneath the vertical locking button. Manipulate the tool until the tip lines up with the bottom of the vertical locking button. Gently pull up on the tool to raise the vertical locking button to unlock the locking mechanism.
Use the Pro-Lok AO-39 Double Slide Tool, an inspection light and an inflatable wedge to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge eight inches from the rear edge of the rear passenger door window. Inflate the wedge according to manufacturer’s instructions. Insert the inspection light into the door cavity six inches from the rear edge of the window glass and identify the vertical linkage rod beneath the manual lock/unlock button. Insert the long end of the AO-39 into the door cavity, three inches from the rear edge of the window glass with the tip facing rearward. Lower the AO-39 nine inches. Rotate the tool 45 degrees clockwise and lift the tool one inch to position the tip of the tool under the bend of the vertical linkage rod. Lift the car-opening tool to raise the linkage rod to unlock the door locking mechanism. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for warnings and removal of the tool.
Use the Slide Lock Vertical-Z™ car-opening tool to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert the box hook flat to the window at either side of the vertical locking button. Push the hooked end into the door cavity. Rotate the tool's shaft towards the front end of the vehicle in order to lower the car opening tool. Once the tool is vertical, lower the tip into the door cavity. Manipulate the car-opening tool until the hook contact the vertical linkage rod. Bind the tool slightly in order to lift the vertical linkage rod and unlock the door locking mechanism.
Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1017 car-opening tool and a wedge to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the wedge along the inside locking button. Carefully insert the TT-1017 tool into the opening between the wedge and the rear edge of the window glass so the tip can grip the linkage rod. Lower the tool approximately five inches and rotate the tool to contact the vertical linkage rod. Watch the locking button for movement when the tool contacts. Hook the linkage rod and bind in order to raise the linkage rod to unlock the door locking mechanism.
The direction to rotate 2007- up driver’s door lock plug to the unlocked position is counterclockwise.
