Choosing the right key machine is a big commitment that every locksmith must make. Other than your service van or possibly some high-end transponder programmers, it represents your largest equipment investment. And though many locksmiths are still using older, tried and tested machines, they may be ready to expand into new locations or additional vans.

Do your research before you buy. Your locksmith distributor should be one of your best sources. Most manufacturers and distributors will have brochures and videos online, but they should also be willing to answer questions based on the needs of your business. And don’t overlook warranties and availability of tech support. Getting help or parts in a timely manner may be even more important than price.

Maverick from Lock Labs

Best-known for their full-featured Triton PLUS key machines and AutoProPad transponder programmers, Lock Labs has introduced two Maverick models aimed at locksmiths just starting out. The company describes Maverick as “an inexpensive solution for those looking for a backup or entry-level key machine” with U.S.-based technical support and warranty service. It can decode, originate and duplicate all major commercial and residential keys and comes with a comprehensive key code database.
