Pacific Lock, the manufacturer that offers locksmiths the ability to sell personalized logo padlocks, has introduced several padlocks, unique padlock configurations and accessories.
Just about every locksmith has bought, sold, unlocked or made keys for laminated padlocks. The laminated padlock, whose body is made of layered pieces of nickel plated steel riveted together, has been around for many years. Pacific Lock manufactures its laminated padlocks to meet U. S. government specifications for materials and durability. To meet these specifications, the “PL” PACLOCK laminated padlocks use a dual ball bearing locking mechanism. The “PL” laminates and rivets are manufactured of 1/16” thick cold roll steel.
A dual ball bearing-equipped padlock uses the ball bearings to control the shackle. When the shackle is in the locked condition, one ball bearing is engaged in each of the leg cutouts, with the actuator preventing both of the ball bearings from moving. When the lock cylinder tailpiece rotates the actuator to the unlocked position, the ball bearings move away from the shackle legs, enabling the shackle to release. When the shackle is closed, the ball bearings engage the shackle leg cutouts as the actuator rotates to the locked condition. This type of lock mechanism cannot be shimmed open.
“The ball bearing design offers a 68 percent increase in pull force resistance versus a lever-lock design while, at the same time, making the open/close operation of the padlock much smoother requiring less effort,” says Pacific Lock President Greg Waugh.
The PACLOCK laminated padlocks will be available in three sizes. The PL1 is 1-3/4” (44 mm) wide; PL3 is 1-9/16” (40 mm) wide; and the PL5 is 2” (51 mm) wide. Each padlock will be equipped with a bumper. Each padlock size will be available in three shackle lengths.
The first laminated padlocks will have a four-pin tumbler lock mechanism using the Pacific Lock PW1 keyway. Future introductions will include a five-pin tumbler version with various restricted and non-restricted keyways. Chart 1 lists the after market key blank numbers that are compatible with these laminated padlocks with the four pin tumbler lock mechanism. For dates of introduction, contact the factory.
“TRUCKER LOCK”
The new “Trucker Lock” laminated padlock, part number 102T, is a “key retained” PL1 body padlock with a two-inch shackle with no shackle spring. This no-frills, highly secure five-pin tumbler laminated padlock has a greenish zinc chromate finish. The key blank number is KB5-P0. This durable padlock is targeted at the trucking industry and those who (1) don't care about how a padlock looks ~ only how it performs and (2) care very much about pricing. The only option for the “Trucker Lock” is keyed differently or keyed alike.
HOCKEY PUCK PADLOCKS
Pacific Lock's new hockey-puck padlocks accept both IC and conventional door lock cylinders. The patent pending “XIC” hockey-puck padlocks are slightly larger than the standard. Both versions of the PACLOCK hockey-puck hidden shackle padlocks are available with the stepped back and the flat back. The flat back design is totally flat.
The standard hockey-puck padlocks are equipped with a six-pin tumbler lock having the KB6-P0 keyway. The “XIC” hockey-puck padlocks are designed to accept small format interchangeable core or key-in-lever/ key-in-knob cylinders using specialized sleeves manufactured of chrome plated brass.
PADLOCK SLEEVES
The X Sleeve is designed to accommodate standard configuration KIK/KIL lock cylinders. This includes standard six-pin tumbler as well as high security including Kaba Peaks , Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, ASSA and others. Contact Pacific Lock for specific applications.
The second sleeve, the IC Sleeve, is designed to accommodate five-, six- and seven-pin tumbler small format interchangeable cores. The “XIC” hockey-puck padlocks can be keyed into existing master key systems or directly to business or residence locks. “XIC” hockey-puck padlocks and sleeve sets are sold separately.
To install a sleeve into the “XIC” padlock body, loosen the 2.5 mm diameter setscrew. The IC Sleeve comes complete; just install the small format interchangeable core. When the core has been installed, insert an operating key and rotate ninety degrees to unlock the shackle. Loosen the setscrew, and slide the sleeve into the padlock making sure the shackle slides through the center hole. Once seated, turn the key to the removal position and the shackle is locked in place. Tighten the setscrew until the sleeve can still slide freely up and down. The IC Sleeve is installed.
To install a KIK/KIL X Sleeve requires installing the appropriate driver onto the rear of the lock cylinder. The Schlage driver has two positions for the spring-loaded retainer cap pin. This driver should be horizontal. Once the driver has been installed, the next step is to mount the hardened steel barrel plug. Make sure the screw hole faces toward the back of the sleeve. Insert the shackle and the stopper into the sleeve. Slide the lock cylinder into the sleeve making sure the driver slides into the stopper and aligns with the slit in the shackle. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to secure the lock cylinder in the sleeve. Insert the operating key and rotate ninety degrees to unlock the shackle. Loosen the setscrew, and slide the sleeve into the padlock making sure the shackle slides through the center hole. Once seated, turn the key to the removal position and the shackle is locked in place. Tighten the setscrew until the sleeve can still slide freely up and down. The X Sleeve is installed.
Pacific Lock has developed the investment cast hockey-puck padlock hasp that can be used with the standard and the XIC versions. This investment cast hasp provides corrosion resistance and strength.
PAC-SHIELD
The new, patented “PAC-SHIELD” is Pacific Lock's interpretation of a weather resistant high security padlock. It is designed to fit over a PACLOCK 150 Series rectangular body padlock having the one-inch shackle. The “PAC-SHIELD” is formed to protect the body of the padlock as well as the legs of the shackle. Installation requires a hammer and a solid surface to secure the shield to the padlock.
The “PAC-SHIELD” is manufactured from 1/8” thick steel, powder coated to resist corrosion. The 150 Series padlock is manufactured of non-ferrous metal, eliminating the problem of rusting. “Your Logo, Your Locks” engraving will be available for the black powder-coated “PAC-SHIELD”.
