Door Chain Security
Chain Reaction™ is a door chain mechanism designed to provide added protection, including a high decibel alarm and a mechanism that sprays an invisible DNA trace that is detectable using ultraviolet light.
The basic door chain has been installed into countless motel/hotel rooms as well as residences. The concept is to prevent someone from gaining entrance. The chain is extended from the jamb to the door using a slide mounted onto the door. For the chain to be connected to the door, the door must be just about closed. As the door is opened, the chain moves along to the end of the slide, stopping further opening. The chain cannot be removed from the slide when the door is open.

Fire Protection
I recently toured a college and came upon an arched opening separating a classrooms corridor and a driveway. On the corridor side of the arch, there was a track on each vertical side and a metal box that was powered by an electric motor. Sticking out of the box along the bottom was what appeared to be a type of metal overhead door. I was told this is a fire shutter, a solid based fire safety curtain.
The solenoid release is linked to the fire alarm system and operates with a controlled release to block the opening. When closed, it provides a fire rated barrier between the building and the driveway.
These are similar to the fire curtains installed in larger theatres to separate the stage behind the opening and the audience. However, many of the theatre fire curtains are made of fabric.
Door Basics
The weight of a door is determined by its height, width, thickness and the composition. The composition of a door is usually wood, hollow metal or aluminum/glass (storefront). Hollow metal is actually a misnomer as most hollow metal doors are not hollow. The gauge of the metal, reinforcements and the core material, determine the weight of a hollow metal door.
Some examples of core material within a hollow metal door are polystyrene, steel-stiffened, honeycomb, temperature resistant, polyurethane, bullet resistant and sound proof.
Hollow core wood doors can have lattice or other forms of corrugated cardboard to provide a rigid face. Solid core wood doors can have particleboard, compressed saw dust or a foam material filling the space within the door.

This key blank also works the 2012 Accent that was introduced during mid-year 2011.

Install Date Every Door Closer
In this economy, your customers will thank you if you record the date the door closer was installed. Most door closer manufacturers offer a warranty from one year to 25 years and a few even offer a limited lifetime warranty. Should the installed door closer begin to have problems, leaking, etc., knowing if the closer is covered under a warranty means the difference between having presenting your customer with a new free door closer or having to charge them for a replacement. Free can get you a lot of points.
Without knowing the installation date, it may not be possible to claim the warranty. The photo shows a door closer that was installed on March 2, 1998.
Car-Opening Techniques: 2007-on Acura MDX
This month we will offer recommended car-opening techniques for the 2007-on Acura MDX. The MDX has been redesigned using bicycle cable style linkage.
Note: the electrical lock unlock button does not operate when the vehicle is in the deadlock position. The primary opening method is to gain access to the passenger compartment using an under the window tool. Once access is gained, the unlocking method varies by tool manufacturer.
Warning: This vehicle is equipped with multi-layer weather stripping at the base of the windows. The windows are extremely tight. Use extreme care as the slightest scrape may result in the window glass breaking. Failure to remove the wedges at the time when the tool manufacturer recommends can result in causing the window glass to break.
The direction to rotate these late model 2007-on Acura MDX door lock plug to the unlocked position is clockwise.
The following opening methods can be used to unlock the 2007-on Acura MDX:
Use the High Tech Tools Long Inside Access 89 Tool to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Separate the glass from the weather strip by positioning a wedge directly above inside door lock button. Insert the Inside Access Tool with the working end pointing towards the front. Reposition the wedge to allow lowering the tool into the door until the shaped portion of the tool is beneath the bottom of the window glass. Rotate the tool clockwise until the shaped portion of the tool is on the passenger compartment side of the window glass. Carefully lift the tool until the working end is within the passenger compartment. Position the working end of the tool in front of the manual door lock button. Manipulate the door lock button towards the front of the vehicle to unlock the locking mechanism. See car opening instructions for removal of the tool.
Use the Pro-Lok AO35 “MCOT-Wide” tool and an inflatable wedge to unlock the rear passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the inflatable wedge 12 inches from the front edge of the rear passenger door window. Inflate the wedge according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Insert the AO33 “MCOT Separator Tool three inches from the front edge of the window with the tip facing rearward. Insert the AO35 tool into the door eight inches from the front edge of the window with the tip facing forward. Lower both tools fourteen inches into the door cavity. Rotate both tools until the working portion is on the passenger compartment side of the window glass. Deflate the wedge.
Carefully lift the AO33 tool until the tip is in the passenger compartment. Lift the AO35 tool into the passenger compartment using the gap created by the AO33 tool. Rotate the AO35 tool 135 degrees counterclockwise and manipulate the tip of the tool behind the manual lock-unlock button. Carefully rotate the manual lock-unlock button, unlocking the locking mechanism. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing the car-opening tool.
Use the Slide Lock AutoBuster III™ car-opening tool and two wedges to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Begin by inserting the wedges towards the front of the door and second wedge far enough apart to accommodate the car-opening tool. Slide the AutoBuster III into the door cavity with the tip facing the rear of the vehicle. Lower the tool until the loop is within the door cavity. Stop immediately and remove both wedges to relieve pressure on the interior side of the window glass. Lower the tool until the loop is beneath the bottom of the window glass. Rotate the tool until the loop is on the interior side of the door cavity. Carefully raise the tool, having the loop enter into the passenger compartment. Maneuver the tool so the tip is in front of the manual lock-unlock button. Press the unlock portion in order to unlock the door locking mechanism. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing the car-opening tool.
Use the Tech-Train Productions TT-1025 car-opening tool to unlock the front passenger door locking mechanism. Insert two wedges about eight inches apart just forward of the inside lock button Carefully insert the TT-1025 tool between the wedges into the door cavity with the bend pointing towards the rear of the vehicle. Lower the tool until the upper bend is beneath the bottom of the glass. Rotate the tool slightly having the bend on the interior side of the glass. Carefully raise the tool until it is just visible between the inside weather stripping and the glass. Stop immediately and remove the wedges. Note: Failure to remove the wedges can result is cracking or breaking the window glass. After the wedges have been removed, slide the tool into the passenger compartment until the tip is visible. Manipulate the tool until the tip is against the lock-unlock button. Use the tip of the car opening tool to unlock the door locking mechanism. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing the car-opening tool.
