People really like the ability to unlock locks without having to use a key. This is one of the reasons residential electronic deadbolt and entry locks have become so popular. Another reason is eliminating having to carry a key, a benefit that parents like. Depending upon the electronic lock manufacturer and model, a person can enter a user code or press the unlock button on a remote fob to unlock the lock. Some residential electronic lock models can extend the deadbolt when leaving simply by pressing the programming button or the remote’s lock button.
Lockey USA’s E910 Series battery powered, electronic keyless deadbolt locks have a motor driven one-inch throw bolt that retracts once a programmed User Code has been entered. Up to six 4- to 10-digit User Codes can be programmed, with one "one time" User Code.
Installation
The E910 Series deadbolts are designed for installation into standard door prep on 1-3/8" to 2" thick doors. The door prep is a 2-1/8" cross bore and a one inch edge bore with a backset of 2-3/8" or 2-3/4". No additional holes must be drilled. The bolt is field adjustable and can convert from 2-3/8" to 2-3/4" backset.
Before installing any lock, make sure the door and door hardware is properly operating. With the door closed, check to be certain the door fits properly within the jamb. Open and close the door, making sure it does not contact the floor during any portion of the sweep. Make sure the door lock latches and secures without excess force.
Installation makes use of an inside mounting plate that secures the keypad assembly and the receiver module. A single wood screw secures the upper portion of the receiver module to the door. Important: Before mounting the receiver module, make sure the turnpiece is in the unlocked position with the upper portion tilted away from the lock edge of the door.
The keypad assembly has an LED illuminated 11-button keypad and a mechanical override lock cylinder. The assembly is 5-1/2" Height x 3-1/8" Width x 1-3/16" Depth, large enough to cover most mechanical deadbolt assemblies. A rubberized washer provides proper seating and some weather resistance.
A cable runs from the keypad assembly through the mounting plate and plugs into a cabled one-way connector extending from the receiver module. Install four purchased AA alkaline batteries and attach the battery lid. The Lockey USA E910 Series deadbolt lock is ready for programming. Inside of the battery lid is a "cheat Sheet" containing basic programming instructions.
Programming
There are several basic programming requirements. The first is the deadbolt must be retracted before the lock can enter the programming mode. If the bolt is not retracted, after entering the programming code and pressing the program button, it will flash red three times, indicating an error. When the bolt is retracted, the programming button will flash green, then it will begin to flash orange indicating the lock is in the programming mode. When programming, a keystroke must occur within six seconds or the lock will exit programming mode.
To ensure a clean programming procedure, begin by restoring all preset factory settings. Press and hold the "R" button just beneath the batteries in the receiver module. When the action has been completed after about five seconds, three long beeps will sound.
To detect the door hand configuration, enter the programming mode using the default programming code "0000" and press the programming (E-Digital) button. The (E-Digital) button slowly flashes orange. Press the "0" and the (E-Digital) button. The (E-Digital) button will flash green twice and sound two long beeps to indicate success.
When the E910 Series deadbolt is operated or programmed, each keystroke has visual and audible confirmations. Audible and illuminated indicators notify when programming is correct or incorrect, when the system has been restored to default and when the batteries are low.
The next step is to change the Program Code, which can be four to ten digits. Numbers can be repeated. Press "0000" (E-Digital) "4" (E-Digital) "new programming code" (E-Digital) to change the Programming Code. For this article, the new Programming Code is "0102960."
User Codes
The E910 Series deadbolt locks can have up to six User Codes and one disposable User Code. The User Codes can be four to ten digits. The default User Code is "1234." A "one time" User Code is valid for a single operation. The same number code can be used more than once. Only the Programming Code can create User Codes.
For this article, the new User Code is "54321." To electronically unlock the door, enter a User code and press the Programming Button.
User Codes can be added individually or as a group. They can be deleted individually or all at once. In addition, User Codes can be temporarily disabled, permitting access by the override key only.
The Auto-Locking Function automatically relocks the deadbolt after being unlocked for 10 to 99 seconds. The default relock time is 30 seconds. The Auto-Locking Function must be programmed.
A mute feature can disable the audio indicators. To turn the mute feature on or off, enter "Programming Code" (E-Digital) "7" (E-Digital).
To enable or disable all User Codes, enter "Programming Code" (E-Digital) "8" (E-Digital).
Once the deadbolt lock has been personalized to the end-user’s requirements, test the programmed operations.
The provided Lockey USA Electronic Deadbolt Lock Mmodel E910R has the remote fob that can lock or unlock the deadbolt from a "line of site" distance of more than 70 feet. Each E910R Electronic Deadbolt Lock can accept up to five remote fobs. Remote fobs can be programmed to more than one Lockey USA Electronic Lock.
For those individuals who physically disabled, the remote fob can be used to unlock the deadbolt and grant access to caregivers without having to go to the door.
Battery life expectancy is approximately 3000 to 4000 operations, which is about ten cycles a day for one year. As the battery becomes weak, the number one button will flash in red and ten rapid beeps will sound when pressing the Programming Button. The memory is not lost when the batteries are dead or replaced. If the batteries are completely drained, the deadbolt can still be operated by the override key.
