Home Automation From Kwikset
At the annual Consumer Electronics Show, lock manufacturers including Schlage and Kwikset introduced new or improved door lock products that connect with home automation systems.
Kwikset displayed its second-generation Kevo Touch lock (launching later this year) and its Kevo™ Convert smart lock conversion kit. Kevo 2nd Gen is engineered to integrate with the following smart home products: Nest Learning Thermostat, Ring Video Doorbell, Honeywell Total Connect Comfort Wi-Fi Thermostats and Android Wear.
“Kevo Convert is the perfect solution for style-driven homeowners who want a smarter lock while maintaining the look of their front door, and for renters who want a smart lock but are unable to replace their existing deadbolt,” says Keith Brandon, Vice President of Residential Access Solutions, Kwikset. “Kevo Convert is a simple way to make your existing lock smarter.”
Homeowners can quickly and easily replace the interior side of their existing deadbolt with Kevo Convert. After installing, users can control their door lock through the proven, simple to use Kevo smartphone app. Top Kevo features enabled through Kevo Convert include InHome Locking and Unlocking, electronic key (eKey) management, the ability to upgrade to remote access through Kevo Plus, smart home product compatibility and lock status monitoring.
Its biggest product introduction was Premis, its first Apple HomeKit™-compatible smart door lock. Premis offers homeowners the convenience of unlocking and locking the door using Siri voice controls and best-in-class, patented security features, including SecureScreen™ and the latest version of Kwikset SmartKey® security.
Schlage’s CES Report
At the 2016 International CES tradeshow,Schlage introduced new features for its Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and showcased the new Schlage Control™ Smart Locks for multi-family properties.
New features for the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt include a Schlage Sense™ app for Apple Watch®, as well as the ability to support Android devices and additional connected home products.
Specifically designed for multi-family properties, Schlage Control™ Smart Locks with ENGAGE™ Technology provide access control for resident entrances, while reducing time on maintenance and overall management costs.
Schlage Control™ Smart Locks are designed to work with third-party access control platforms, and are currently compatible with the CBORD and StratIS solutions. Schlage Control™ Smart Locks put multi-family residents in the driver's seat by allowing them to use both smart credentials and/or third-party access control apps on their smart phones.
Residential Sales Booster
Recent television commercials from American Family Insurance are offering homeowner insurance discounts for customers with added security features. The ads specifically endorse the Ring Video Doorbell (www.ring.com). Via Wifi and a companion app, folks can see who's at the door on their phones, and talk to them from inside the house or miles away. Other insurance companies offer discounts for specific rugged deadbolt locks and alarm systems.
With insurance discounts, your customers may find that secure locks and access control systems pay for themselves. Why not recommend to your residential customers that they check with their agent to see if discounts are available?

HID’s Top 5 Secure Identity Trends
Based on insights from top customers in numerous markets and deployments of its latest solutions, HID Global has identified the top five trends it believes will have the biggest impact on identity and access management, citizen identification, and the Internet of Things in 2016.
“We’re watching several developing trends, including growing demand for a more mobile-centric and satisfying user experience that HID Global believes will be the primary driver for security technology innovation in 2016,” says Stefan Widing, Executive Vice President ASSA ABLOY and head of HID Global.
The five identified trends are:
- “Mobilizing” security will make it more pervasive and personalized. A new, more secure identity lifestyle will be built around the convenience of ever-present mobile devices. Computer and network logon, driver licenses, and other applications will more seamlessly join physical security functions on phones, tablets, and laptops.
- Greater focus on the user experience This will help close the gap between planning and compliance, while ensuring that security adapts to rather than defines end-user habits and lifestyles. Old ways of authenticating will be replaced by more satisfying alternatives.
- Secure, connected identities will fuel safety and innovation in how we work, shop, and play. The industry will enter its next chapter of connected identities, employing multilayered security strategies that include biometrics to bind these identities to their legitimate owners.
- More attention on privacy in an increasingly connected and mobile-first world. Identity will expand beyond people and their personal identity to the identity of objects and their authenticity, accentuating the need to protect personal information across increasingly interconnected devices, services, and applications.
- Security policies and best practices will become as important as technology advances. The industry will sharpen its focus on not only what to deploy, but how – from the first mobile driver licenses in the US to unified credential management systems that enable organizations to more holistically address both facility and information security. The industry will also adopt best practices, so stolen identities are useless to thieves.
